I will teach a Plein Air Class in beautiful Marin County amid the wildflowers, rolling hills, spectacular views and majestic oaks.
 The class begins with an overview of plein air painting. I share plein air and nature paintings from various artists with the students, talking about what makes the paintings successful, and show them my painting set up.
I then do a demonstration painting for all to see my approach and learn from how I do this.
 The majority of the class is for th students to paint, while I go around and help each student individually.

CLASS TITLE : Plein Air Nature Painting ~ Exploring Your Voice en Plein Air

DATE OF CLASS : April 1 & 2, 2023

Levels:
Students of ALL levels are welcome. It is good if students have a basic familiarity with the painting medium of their choice.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Find your own personal interpretation through Plein Air Painting to the stunning landscape and natural elements. Focusing on specific subjects in Nature, students will learn how to observe and paint these subjects and their surroundings, enriching each student’s understanding of how to paint the natural world.
The workshop will encourage each student to choose a subject which speaks to you, and has meaning for you. Maeve emphasizes for each student to explore their own voice in doing their work. The workshop is geared toward all levels, encouraging experienced painters to dive deeper for their creative voice, and helping less experienced painters explore their painting and grow.
The first day of the Workshop, we will convene inside and Maeve will give an historical overview on different aspects of Nature Painting.  Students learn of varying approaches for plein air painting, plein air techniques and  view paintings from various well known artists.
Once outdoors Maeve will paint a demonstration painting at the start of each session, discussing the various elements in the Landscape and how to approach these elements in your painting. How to use different brushes, as well as discussion of value and color, and how to enhance your sense of depth and atmosphere in your paintings are addressed in the demonstration.

After each morning demo, students will set up for the day at the painting location and paint.                                                               Maeve will help each student choose their subject, and help get them launched for the day of painting as needed. Once everyone is painting, Maeve circulates, spending time with each painter throughout the day, giving individual attention and instruction as you work.

We usually gather at the end of each day, sharing our paintings  and our painting experience with one another.

Maeve’s many years of teaching experience, and her kind encouraging approach help each painter grow and have a rewarding painting experience.

On the first day Maeve gives an historical overview presentation on Plein Air Painting.  Class then convenes at the painting location, where she gives demonstrations at the beginning of each painting session, then continues to give each painter guidance and help throughout the day.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Art has been a lifelong pursuit for Maeve Croghan.  Her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, as well the influences of Emily Carr, Georgia O’Keefe and the Group of 7 have helped formed her innovative approach to Plein Air and Nature painting. She has BA from New College of California in 'Art and Education’.

She has numerous accolades – her paintings have been in Museum exhibits in Japan, Alaska, California, Oregon, New Mexico and Michigan. Maeve has been the recipient of many prestigious juried awards.  

Her paintings are in collections throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and Mexico. Her paintings are featured on the wine labels of Castoro Cellars from Paso Robles, Ca.  Maeve’s paintings have been chosen for editions of the National Juried Art books, “ART of Northern California” & “American Art Collector”, as well the "Studio Visit" art journal.  

Recently her painting ‘Russet Vines’ won the Georges Dubouef Beaujolais Nouveau wine label contest, which featured her painting on over 1,000,000 bottles of wine.

Maeve teaches Plein Air painting classes regularly with Mackinac Island Arts Council on Mackinac Island, MI in the summers, and teaches private Plein Air painting classes with numerous students.  

Maeve is the founder of the Mendocino Eco Artists, and artist group dedicated to having Art shows benefitting local environmental groups.

She maintains an Art Studio in San Francisco, at the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists’ Community, and in Mendocino, Ca.

'Plein Air ~ Nature into Art'
Teaching at the famous Mendocino Art Center
Weekend Workshop - April 9 &10

Explore the painting process while connecting with the natural world. Students will be guided by Maeve to keenly observe nature as she demonstrates and instructs how to paint from your observations and create an expressive and meaningful painting.

Focusing on specific subjects in nature, students will learn how to observe and paint these subjects and their surroundings, enriching each student’s understanding of nature.

The class will start in the studio with an historical overview presentation on different aspects of nature painting. We then continue outdoors to our painting location, which will offer a variety of painting subjects. Maeve will paint a demonstration painting, talking about the various elements in the landscape and how to approach each element in your own painting.

Students then set up for the day, beginning one to two paintings per day, in oil or acrylic. Maeve will spend time with each painter throughout the day, discussing where they are going with their painting, giving advice and perspective as desired or needed by the painter. Throughout the day Maeve guides and enables each student to produce a nearly finished painting of their nature subject.

The class is open to all levels. Maeve’s many years of teaching experience is enriching for beginning to advanced students.
